Punk Rock HR Question 25: Do I Need A Resume?

Dear Punk Rock HR:

What do you think about this?

Love, obviously a Cog in a Giant Machine

*

Dear Cog,

Seth Godin writes, “Great jobs, world class jobs, jobs people kill for… those jobs don’t get filled by people emailing in resumes. Ever.”

He is right…

…but you will never have a great, world class job. The best most of us can hope for is a pretty good job with good benefits and nice co-workers.

Those pretty good jobs — the jobs in accounting, finance, IT, human resources, procurement, customer service, marketing, sales, the advertising department, accounts payable, supply chain, R&D, etc. — are filled by regular people who have resumes.

It must be nice to be Seth Godin, though.

Love,
Laurie

Must be nice. I like to think I’ve done a pretty good job for myself, but a c.v. or resume is just part of the deal. I’m about to jump in the job hunt, and I don’t have a stellar blog (probably because I’ve been too busy with my nose to the non-stellar grindstone) or a bevy of references waiting to shower me in fawning praise. So I suppose it’s Resume City for me.

Don’t get me wrong, the theory has merit, I just think in practice, for the majority of job hunters right now, it’s not practical. Maybe one day we’ll move past the resume to another way of communicating our experiences and qualifications to potential employers. We can dream…

Kelly — I’m so glad you commented because the theory does have merit but is totally unrealistic. Maybe we need pink resumes like Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde?
