SHRM Convention: Are You Attending?

Anyone attending the SHRM convention in June?

To save the date, I purchased a pass for the expo halls ($95/day) instead of buying tickets for the seminars. If I learned anything from the 2007 BlogHer convention, it’s all about networking and drinking. BlogHer was interesting, but I had a tremendous amount of fun on the pier with Kate, Weetabix, and Miss Pink of Perfection — and I found it more interesting than some of the seminars. (Although I did enjoy listening to Penelope Trunk and seeing Elizabeth Edwards.)

(Come to think of it — anyone going to BlogHer in San Francisco? I might attend just for the fun of a few days in California.)

Anyway, I’m thinking of hosting a happy hour event for HR Bloggers on Monday or Tuesday night during the SHRM convention. (Can I compete with the Lionel Richie show?)

Anyone interested in happy hour and bonding? Let me know.

I’ll be at BlogHer in San Francisco from Thursday through Sunday. You should go!

Average Jane, you talked me into it. I’m booked!!

I’ve been to one or two SHRM conventions, and the main thing I learned is to network the HELL out of those puppies. Show no fear, go to every party, and be sure to break into the “Happiest Company on the Block” or whatever party, because that’s where you want to work. I’ve gotten job offers every time I’ve attended one of these things, just by meeting tons of people and enjoying myself. HR people are pretty human in that they want to work with people they “know” and enjoy. You would do really well there, so go!

I’m not attending :( Can’t they make it somewhere close to me and cheap?

@Franny I’m not really looking for a job unless one falls into my lap. I’m a big-time HR Blogger! ;) I will take your advice and network like a crazy woman.

@Rachel I think SHRM assumes that companies will send employees to the convention. Sadly, after 12 years of working for Fortune 500 companies, this will be my 1st convention. Oh, and I’m paying for it. Thanks, SHRM, for keeping those prices reasonable.

I have never been to one either. :-(

Laur — You’re going to have to report out on the experience so that we can all live vicariously through you.

Dude, you should find a way to go! How can I have a happy hour without some witty banter?

Dammit that sounds fun. I might have to find a way to finance a trip.

Wait — & leave the creature comforts of the swamp???

    I know, I know. I’m such a hypocrite!
