You don’t just wake up one morning and say, “I’m going to write and direct a film.” There’s actually a lot of heartache and a lot of lessons learned along the way.

I think it’s interesting to talk to a creative professional who has gone through a journey like this. We can find lots of parallels to our journeys in marketing, sales, procurement, or even in human resources.

One such creative professional is David Mahmoudieh. He is the writer and director of the film Snake Dick. Today, we are talking about his own creative journey.

In the filmmaking space, it can be hard to create something new that hasn’t been done thousands of times before. I asked David how he navigates this and represents humanity, specifically MAGA-supporters, in a fresh way.

He said, “I really sort of had to do a lot of soul searching, and a lot of outlining to see, okay, how can I tell this story, but in a way that it attacks what Trump stands for, without attacking those who stand with him?”

I’m talking about these topics—and more on David’s short film Snake Dick— in my weekly newsletter. I’m also sharing a video to help you think about your week ahead. You can sign up here.
